How to Identify Early Signs of Gum Recession

Gum recession tends to happen gradually, meaning that patients may not immediately notice it. As gum tissue recedes, there may be tenderness and bleeding. If this condition isn’t treated, a patient’s risk of tooth decay and tooth loss is increased. Not to mention, patients are likely to experience increased pain and sensitivity as the tooth root becomes exposed.

Understanding the initial signs of gum recession can allow you to seek treatment sooner, which can prevent a host of oral health problems down the line. Seek a consultation with your dentist if you’re worried that your gums are receding.

What Causes Gum Recession?

Several factors can increase someone’s likelihood of experiencing gum recession, including poor oral hygiene habits, brushing too aggressively, gum disease, and even age. Gum tissue naturally recedes over time, which is compounded if the patient is experiencing other contributing factors simultaneously.

Some patients can also be genetically predisposed to the condition, even if they’re staying on top of their oral health. Using tobacco products can prevent proper blood flow to the gums, which increases the chances of gum disease and recession. Other potential causes include hormonal changes and grinding or clenching your teeth.

Ways to Identify Gum Recession

Early intervention is key to preventing further gum recession and addressing the underlying cause of the recession, such as periodontal disease.

Tender Gums: Gums may become red, swollen, and tender. Patients may experience bleeding after brushing or flossing.

“Long” Teeth: If you’re noticing visible changes to your gum line, such as additional exposed portions of teeth — this is a telltale sign that recession may be occurring.

Increased Sensitivity: Sudden sensitivity can be linked to exposed tooth roots. Even if you can’t see the root but are experiencing discomfort, check with your dentist to see if gum recession is causing sensitive nerves to be triggered.

Loose Teeth: Often a sign of advanced recession, loose or shifting teeth are an indicator that you should see a dentist immediately.

Exposed Roots: As gums recede, patients may notice that part of the tooth root becomes exposed. This often goes hand in hand with increased pain and sensitivity as either hot or cold sensations can trigger the exposed nerves.

What to Do About Gum Recession

Minor gum recession is often treated with tooth scaling and root planing, which are a form of deep cleaning that removes plaque buildup. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to clear out any harmful bacteria. Moderate cases may also be treated with dental bonding. In more serious cases when gum recession has been left untreated for a longer period of time, surgery may be required.
