LANAP®, which stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is a minimally invasive treatment protocol for patients suffering from periodontal disease. The treatment uses a specialized laser to remove bacteria and diseased tissue, while preserving healthy tissue, to promote healing. In fact, it is the only FDA- approved laser technology designed specifically to treat gum disease.
The LANAP® protocol is a welcomed alternative to traditional gum surgery, which is often resective, meaning that supporting tissue is taken away. Instead, LANAP® is a regenerative treatment that aims for regrowth of not only the gum attachment to teeth but also then tooth-supporting jaw bone. This technology is unique from other “laser” treatments because it is able to specifically target diseased tissue and the associated disease-causing bacteria without harming healthy tissues. After the laser has removed the infected tissue, it stimulates the formation of a natural blood clot, which acts as a biological seal to protect the area as it heals. Often, the bite is adjusted to minimize undue force on the tooth to maximize the healing potential. This treatment has been supported by human histological studies showing periodontal regeneration in previously diseased sites.
A brief summary of the protocol can be seen in the figure below.
LANAP® offers several advantages to traditional treatment options. It is significantly less invasive than conventional gum surgery. The treatment encourages the body’s natural healing process and attempts to regenerate (rather than remove) supporting tissue. Since there are no incisions and no stitches, there is much faster healing with little to no downtime after the treatment is completed. It is usually performed in one or two short visits, and most patients report a very easy recovery period with minimal swelling or discomfort. Outcomes are generally very favorable in controlling disease, reducing the risk of tooth loss, and improving overall quality of life. For these reasons, most patients prefer this treatment approach over others.
At Northern Virginia Periodontics, we are proud to have doctors who have gone through the extensive training and certification that is necessary to be able to provide this therapy for our patients. In order to determine whether you are a good candidate for LANAP®, our doctors will need to perform a comprehensive periodontal examination, which will include gum measurements and X-rays to diagnose your level of disease. Our team will clearly explain all of your options and help you make an informed decision about what is right for you. Call us today to learn more!
